It's been a year...

It's been a year, and not a day (sometimes moment) goes by that I don't think about my mom. I miss her terribly. I hate that I can't talk to her about all of the amazing things that have happened this year. Miss you, Mom. Love you, always.

Returning to the Academy

In a week I will be returning to the academy for my second round of training. Our academy takes a full year, with the first round of training at the academy taking about six weeks, and this second round about two. In between being AT the academy, we are working closely with field training officers and taking lots of quizzes and tests to make sure we are retaining the knowledge we need. While I wish it took less time to get our certifications, I am glad that they take an approach like this to ensure we are actually getting something out of it. This next round will include another standardized test, some defensive tactics, and some scenario based live training, as well as daily PT. We will also continue with weapon training, and must pass our range qualifications.

I am most looking forward to the range qualifications. I have been pretty diligent in going to the range almost weekly and hopefully that time will pay off. I plan on going back to the range at least three or four times in the next three weeks just to get a little better with everything. I am already very proficient, but I want to score above normal on my quals. Need something to strive for, right?

Well, hopefully in five and a half months, I will have my certification, and all of this will actually pay off. With my certification, I can bid for different posts, transfer to different institutions, and even possibly to different departments in other states. I think, though, that I will try to stay here where I am at for at least a year after my certification. I need time to grow in the job, and get a better feel for it. Though, I have considered going into county corrections in my home county. The pay there is better, and the commute much less. Also, I would have a better chance of moving up to patrol as a reserve or even full-time much easier from there. After all, I do want to be a patrolman, maybe even an investigator/detective. Time will tell, and we shall see. Need to think about the near future for now.
